How to clean your dust collector (the right way)
Your dust collector works hard every single day, keeping your salon cleaner and protecting your lungs from fine nail dust. But to keep it performing at its best, you need to clean it regularly. The key? Do it the right way because the wrong method can damage your unit.
Why Cleaning Matters
A dust collector that’s clogged with dust won’t work properly. You’ll notice:
-
Reduced suction power
-
More dust settling on your desk
-
Your filter wearing out faster
-
Extra strain on the motor
Routine cleaning helps your filter last longer and keeps your workspace fresh and safe.
What not to use
This is important: never use liquids or wet wipes to clean your dust collector. Moisture can damage the internal parts and shorten the lifespan of your machine as well as voiding your warranty.
The Right Way to Clean Your Dust Collector
- Always wear gloves
-
Turn off and unplug your dust collector
Safety first - always switch off and unplug before cleaning.
-
Remove the filter
Take out the filter so you can clean the inside of the unit properly.
- Tap out dust from your filter into a bin
-
Vacuum the internal unit
Use the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner or canned air (keyboard cleaner) to remove built-up dust from inside the collector.
-
Wipe with a microfibre cloth
Gently wipe down the inside and outside of the unit with a dry microfibre cloth.
-
Use a dust brush for detail work
A soft dust brush is great for getting into corners and around vents.
-
Re-insert the filter (or replace if needed)
Pop your filter back in or swap it for a new one if it’s at the end of its life.
How Often Should You Clean It?
For busy salons, aim to clean your dust collector daily. If you’re a home-based tech or working fewer clients, every 2–3 days may be enough. Always check your filter regularly for buildup.
Your dust collector is one of the most important tools in your salon. With regular, careful cleaning - using only a vacuum, microfibre cloth, or dust brush - you’ll extend its life, keep suction strong, and protect both you and your clients from harmful dust.
Keep a soft dust brush next to your station and make a quick clean part of your end-of-day routine.
