How to Create a Tortoiseshell Pumpkin Nail Design

Tortoiseshell nails are a timeless trend, but why not give them a seasonal twist? This tortie nail pumpkin nail art tutorial combines rich autumn tones with a fun Halloween nail vibe. Using the KB Brush Collection and a mix of glass and gel shades, you’ll create a dimensional, glossy pumpkin that’s as chic as it is spooky.

What You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Create the Base Shape

With KB Brush 05, apply your chosen amber glass/tortoiseshell gel in the shape of a pumpkin (or any abstract tortie base shape you prefer). Cure under your lamp.

Step 2: Add Blooming Gel

Apply a thin coat of blooming gel over your pumpkin shape. With KB Brush 03, dab the same amber glass gel in small patches to create depth and darker tones. Do not cure yet.

Step 3: Blend in Brown

Using KB Brush 04, mix a small amount of dark brown gel with your amber glass gel. Apply this mixture randomly to the pumpkin, keeping the tones organic. Do not cure yet.

Step 4: Define with Black

Still with KB Brush 04, add touches of black gel into your design. Avoid placing it directly in the centre of the brown – this way, all tones (amber, brown, black) remain visible. Allow the colours to bloom slightly, then cure.

Step 5: Smooth with Builder Gel (Key Step!)

With KB Brush 06, apply clear builder gel over the entire pumpkin to smooth out the surface. Cure.

Once cured, refine the surface with a KB 240 grit file to remove any lumps or bumps. Finish this step with a matte top coat.

Step 6: Add Details

Using KB Brush 01 and black art gel, add fine detailing to enhance your pumpkin (think lines, stalks, or shading). Cure once you’re happy with the look.

Step 7: Seal the Design

Finish by applying a layer of no wipe top coat to lock in the design. Cure for a long-lasting glossy finish.
