Should Nail Soak Off & Removal Be Free?

Should Nail Soak Off & Removal Be Free?

If there’s one thing nail techs debate constantly, it’s this - should soak off and removal be included for free… or charged separately?

Some clients expect it included. Some nail techs feel awkward charging and others are sitting there spending 45 minutes removing another salon’s rock solid acrylic for absolutely nothing.

So let’s talk about it properly.

First Things First: Removal Is A Service

Let’s stop pretending removal is “just taking nails off.”

Removal requires:

  • Time
  • Skill
  • Product knowledge
  • Tools
  • Acetone
  • E-file bits
  • Risk management
  • Client care

And most importantly?

Your hands. Your energy. Your appointment time.

Whether you’re soaking off BIAB, removing hard gel, debulking acrylic, or carefully removing another tech’s work without damaging the natural nail… That is time, product and work and work should be paid for.

But Other Nail Techs Do It For Free…”

Some salons include removal within infills or reappointments. That’s completely their choice.

But here’s the important part:

Free doesn’t actually mean free.

Usually, it’s:

  • Built into the service price
  • Only included for existing clients
  • Only included if the nails were originally done by them
  • Limited to certain products

No successful business is regularly giving away 30- 60 minutes of labour without accounting for it somewhere.

The Real Problem? Nail Techs Are Undercharging

A lot of techs avoid charging for removal because they’re scared clients will:

  • Complain
  • Go elsewhere
  • Think they’re “too expensive”

Meanwhile those same techs are:

  • Running behind
  • Exhausted
  • Fully booked but underpaid
  • Doing free labour daily

If you’re spending:

  • 30 minutes soaking off BIAB
  • 45 minutes removing acrylic
  • or an hour fixing another salon’s damage…

…that time has value.

Because during that hour, you could’ve booked another paying service.

Other Salon Removals Should NEVER Be Free

Removing another salon’s work is unpredictable.

You don’t know:

  • What products were used
  • Whether MMA was involved
  • How thick the enhancement is
  • If there’s lifting or damage underneath
  • How long it’ll take

And somehow clients expect:
“Just a quick soak off.”

Meanwhile you’re fighting for your life with:

  • Outgrown acrylic
  • Random builder layers
  • lifting
  • Three different systems
  • And enough glue to hold a house together

Other techs removals take more time, more effort, and more risk. They absolutely deserve a separate charge.

So Should Removal Ever Be Included?

Honestly? Sometimes yes. Many techs successfully:

  • Include removal in reappointments and charge for this time
  • Include simple BIAB removal before a fresh set And include this in your time and pricing

But the key difference is this:

It’s a business decision, not an obligation.

If you choose to include removal:

  • Price your services accordingly
  • Set clear policies
  • Explain what is and isn’t included

Because “free” without boundaries quickly turns into resentment.

Clients Don’t Usually Mind Paying - If You’re Confident

The biggest shift happens when nail techs stop apologising for pricing.

Clients pay for:

  • Hair removal
  • Hair extensions removal
  • Lash removal
  • Tattoo removal
  • Beauty treatments

Why should nails be different?

When you confidently explain:

  • removal protects nail health
  • takes time
  • and is part of professional maintenance…

Most clients completely understand.

Here’s The Truth

The nail industry has normalised free labour for too long and soak offs are one of the biggest examples.

If removal:

  • takes time
  • requires skill
  • uses your tools
  • affects your schedule
  • and protects the client’s nails…

…it is a service.

And services deserve to be paid for.

Whether you:

  • charge separately
  • include removal within pricing
  • or offer it only to existing clients…

The important thing is this:

Make it intentional.

Not guilt based.
Not fear based.
Not “because everyone else does.”

Your pricing should support:

  • your time
  • your business
  • your energy
  • and your profit.

Because burnt out nail techs doing free soak offs at 8pm are not running sustainable businesses.
