Why Does My E-File Bit Keep Skipping?

If your efile bit feels like it’s bouncing, jumping or skipping across the nail instead of moving smoothly through the product, don’t just grip your handpiece tighter and carry on.

Skipping is usually telling you that something needs adjusting.

Your speed, pressure, bit choice, angle and even the condition of your bit can all affect how smoothly your e-file works.

Is your RPM too low?

One of the first things to consider is your speed.

There’s a misconception that using an e-file at a very low RPM automatically makes it safer. However, if your speed is too low for the task, the bit may struggle to move efficiently through the product.

This can encourage you to apply more pressure, which can lead to dragging, skipping and increased friction.

For product removal, you should typically work around 20,000–30,000 RPM, depending on the bit, product and technique.

Detailed product refinement around the cuticle area may be performed at lower speeds, often around 10,000–15,000 RPM.

Your RPM should always be appropriate for the individual bit and task rather than choosing one speed for everything.

Are you applying too much pressure?

Your e-file bit should do the work.

Pressing harder doesn’t necessarily make product come off faster.

Excessive pressure can make it harder to maintain smooth contact and can increase friction and heat.

Instead, maintain controlled contact and allow the cutting or abrasive surface of your bit to work through the product.

If you feel as though you constantly need to push your e-file into the nail, investigate why.

Are you using the correct part of the bit?

For product removal, you will generally use the appropriate working surface or belly of the bit.

Trying to remove large amounts of product using a small area of the bit, particularly the tip - concentrates your pressure and can make the handpiece more difficult to control.

The exact working surface will depend on the shape of the bit, which is why understanding your individual e-file bits is so important.

Is your bit suitable for the product?

A bit that’s perfect for delicate refinement isn’t necessarily the bit you want for removing a large amount of enhancement product.

Consider the material, shape and grit.

If your bit is too fine for the task, you may find yourself repeatedly going over the same area or applying additional pressure because removal feels slow.

Choose the bit based on what you actually need it to do.

Is your e-file bit worn?

Bits don’t last forever.

Diamond bits have an abrasive surface that gradually wears with use, much like sandpaper. Cutting surfaces on other bits can also become less effective over time.

If a bit that once worked beautifully has suddenly started dragging or requires noticeably more effort, inspect it.

A worn bit can cause technicians to compensate with additional pressure and repeated passes.

Check your angle

Your bit needs controlled contact with the surface.

Working at an unsuitable angle can reduce the effective contact area and cause the bit to catch or skip.

Your angle will vary according to the shape of the bit and the task being performed, so don’t assume every bit should be held in exactly the same position.

Don’t fight your e-file

If your e-file bit is skipping, bouncing or dragging, don’t simply push harder.

Stop and troubleshoot.

Check your RPM, pressure, angle, bit choice and the condition of the bit.

Good e-filing should feel controlled and efficient.
