Which Nail Liner Brush Should I Use? A Guide to Liner & Striper Brushes
If you’ve ever looked at several nail art liner brushes and wondered, “Which one am I actually supposed to use?”, you’re not alone.
Liner brushes might look similar but the length of the bristles can completely change how the brush behaves and the type of nail art it’s best suited to.
As a general rule, shorter bristles give you more control for small, intricate details, while longer bristles provide more flexibility and flow for creating longer, smoother lines.
The Katie Barnes liner and striper brush range includes four different lengths so you can choose the right level of control and flexibility for your design.
Short Liner Brush 01

Bristle length: 5mm
Best for: Short lines, tiny details, outlines, intricate nail art and controlled detailing.
The Short Liner Brush 01 is your go to when you want maximum control.
Its short 5mm bristles make it easier to control exactly where your product goes, particularly when working on smaller areas or creating intricate designs.
Because there is less length and movement in the bristles, it’s a great choice for nail techs who are new to line work or find longer liner brushes difficult to control.
Use Brush 01 for tiny details, short lines, outlining designs and precision work where accuracy is more important than creating one long, continuous stroke.
Long Liner Brush 02

Bristle length: 10mm
Best for: Fine lines, swirls, curves, outlines and everyday nail art.
The Long Liner Brush 02 gives you a little more length and flexibility while still offering plenty of control.
With 10mm bristles, it sits between a short detail liner and our longer striper brushes, making it a brilliant all rounder.
The additional length helps you create smoother, more fluid lines and curves without the brush feeling difficult to control.
If you’re looking for one liner brush for everyday nail art, Brush 02 is a versatile choice for fine lines, swirls, outlines and detailed designs.
Long Striper Brush 11

Bristle length: 20mm
Best for: Longer fine lines, flowing line work, swirls and intricate designs.
When you want your lines to become longer and more fluid, move up to the Long Striper Brush 11.
Its 20mm bristles provide a balance between flexibility and control, allowing the brush to glide across the nail and create beautifully fine, consistent lines.
Rather than trying to manually draw every section of a long line, load the bristles with product and allow the length of the brush to help guide the stroke.
It’s particularly useful for flowing designs, longer lines, swirls and detailed line work.
Ultra Long Striper Brush 12

Bristle length: 30mm
Best for: Ultra fine continuous lines, long straight lines and geometric nail art.
At 30mm, the Ultra Long Striper Brush 12 has the longest bristles in the Katie Barnes liner and striper collection.
Those extra long bristles allow the brush to hold more product, helping you create longer, continuous strokes without constantly stopping to reload.
It’s ideal when you want a beautifully smooth line running across the nail, particularly for long straight lines and geometric designs.
The extra length also means there’s more flexibility in the bristles, so instead of trying to control every millimetre of the brush, allow the brush to glide and do the work for you.

Shorter or longer nail art brush - which is better?
Neither is better - they simply create different results.
Shorter bristles = more control.
Choose Brush 01 or 02 when you’re creating smaller details, shorter lines or designs where you want to closely control the movement of your brush.
Longer bristles = more flow.
Choose Brush 11 or 12 when you want longer, smoother strokes. The additional bristle length helps the brush glide across the nail and can make it easier to create consistent lines without lots of stops and starts.
If you’re struggling to create a long straight line using a short liner, it doesn’t necessarily mean your line work is the problem – you might simply be using the wrong brush for the job.
Choosing the right bristle length can make nail art feel considerably easier.
Quick Guide
Want maximum control? Short Liner Brush 01 – 5mm
Want an everyday liner? Long Liner Brush 02 – 10mm
Want longer, flowing lines? Long Striper Brush 11 – 20mm
Want ultra-long, continuous straight lines? Ultra Long Striper Brush 12 – 30mm
Once you understand how bristle length affects your line work, choosing the right nail art brush becomes much easier and you might just find that the design you’ve been struggling with simply needed a different liner.
