How to Avoid Heat Spikes and Friction When E-Filing
If your client says their nail feels hot while you’re e-filing, it’s a sign to stop and assess your technique. Heat during e-filing is caused by friction. While some warmth can naturally occur when two surfaces make contact, excessive heat or a sudden heat spike should never simply be ignored.
The good news? With the correct e-file bit, speed, pressure and technique, uncomfortable heat can be avoided.
What causes heat when using an e-file?
Heat is created when friction builds between the e-file bit and the product or nail.
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding e-files is that the slower the RPM, the safer the service. This isn’t necessarily true. If your e-file speed is too low for the task you’re performing, you may instinctively compensate by:
- Applying more pressure
- Moving the bit more slowly
- Going over the same area repeatedly
- Spending longer trying to remove the product
All of these can create additional friction and therefore more heat.
Rather than simply turning your efile down, the aim should be to find the correct balance between RPM, bit choice, pressure and movement.
1. Use the correct RPM
Your e-file needs enough speed to allow the bit to work efficiently.
For product removal, a nail technician should typically work at approximately 20,000–30,000 RPM, depending on the e-file, bit, product and technique.
For more detailed product refinement around the cuticle area, speeds may be reduced to approximately 10,000–15,000 RPM.
These aren’t numbers that should simply be copied without understanding the technique behind them. Your speed should always be appropriate for the bit you’re using, the task you’re performing and your level of training.
Remember: lower doesn’t automatically mean safer.
Working at an RPM that’s too low while applying excessive pressure can generate more friction than working confidently at an appropriate speed with controlled pressure.
2. Let the e-file bit do the work
You shouldn’t need to force your efile through the product.
Applying excessive pressure increases the contact and friction between the bit and product, which can quickly create heat.
A correctly selected bit at an appropriate RPM should efficiently cut through or refine the material without you having to push it into the nail.
Think controlled contact rather than pressure.
If you constantly feel as though you need to press harder to get your bit to work, ask yourself why.
- Is the RPM appropriate?
- Is the grit suitable?
- Is the bit designed for what you’re trying to do?
- Is the bit worn?
More pressure isn’t usually the answer.
3. Don’t stay in one place
Keeping a rotating bit in the same area for too long concentrates friction and heat in one spot. Keep your movements controlled and consistent rather than repeatedly working over one tiny area.
This doesn’t mean racing across the nail. Your movements still need to be deliberate and controlled, but you shouldn’t allow the bit to sit and generate unnecessary friction.
If you need to return to an area, move on and come back to it rather than continually working the same spot.
4. Choose the correct bit for the job
There is no single efile bit that should be used for every part of every service. Different materials, shapes and grits are designed to perform different jobs. For example, a carbide bit designed for efficient product removal will behave very differently from a fine diamond bit designed for detailed cuticle work. Using a bit that’s too fine for heavy product removal can mean making significantly more passes over the nail. Similarly, using the wrong shape can reduce efficiency and encourage you to compensate with pressure. The more unnecessary passes and pressure you introduce, the more opportunity there is for friction to build.
Choose your bit based on the task, product and area you’re working on.
5. Use the correct part of the bit
Technique isn’t just about which bit you choose, it’s also about how you use it. When removing product, you will generally work with the appropriate working surface or belly of the bit rather than trying to dig into the product with the tip. Using the correct surface gives you better contact and allows the bit to work efficiently. The tip of many bits is intended for precision rather than bulk removal, and incorrect angles can create concentrated pressure in a very small area. Understanding the working surfaces of your individual bits is therefore essential.
6. Match the grit to the task
Just like a hand file, efile bits are available in different grits. If you’re trying to remove a significant amount of enhancement product with a bit that’s too fine, it’s going to take longer. You’ll make more passes, spend longer on each nail and potentially start applying additional pressure because the product isn’t coming away quickly enough.
For bulk product removal, a suitable coarser grit can make the process significantly more efficient. Finer grits can then be used where appropriate for refinement and finishing. The goal isn’t to use the most aggressive bit possible. It’s to use the correct grit for the job you’re asking it to perform.
7. Replace worn efile bits
Sometimes the problem isn’t your technique - it’s your bit. E-file bits don’t last forever. Diamond bits have an abrasive coating that gradually wears with use, much like sandpaper. Cutting surfaces on other bits can also become less effective over time.
As a bit wears, you may subconsciously start compensating by:
- Pressing harder
- Making additional passes
- Increasing your working time
And once again, you’re creating more friction.
Pay attention to how your bits perform. If a bit that previously removed or refined product efficiently suddenly feels as though it’s dragging, isn’t cutting effectively or requires noticeably more pressure, inspect it for wear.
8. Make sure your efile is working efficiently
Your handpiece matters too.
A goodquality professional efile should operate smoothly with minimal vibration. Excessive vibration can make controlled movements more difficult and encourage the technician to grip the handpiece or apply pressure unnecessarily.
Always maintain your efile according to the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure your bit is correctly inserted and secure before beginning the service.
What should you do if your client feels heat?
Stop.
Don’t continue working through discomfort.
Move away from the area and allow it to cool before assessing what caused the heat.
Ask yourself:
- Was I applying too much pressure?
- Was my RPM too low or inappropriate for the task?
- Was I staying in one area for too long?
- Am I using the correct bit and grit?
- Is my bit worn?
Heat is feedback.
Rather than accepting it as a normal part of efiling, use it as an indication that something within your bit choice, speed or technique may need adjusting.
The key to reducing heat when efiling
Avoiding heat isn’t about simply turning your e-file speed down.
Effective efiling comes from understanding how speed, pressure, bit choice, grit and movement work together.
When you’re using an appropriate bit at an appropriate RPM, maintaining controlled movement and allowing the bit to do the work, you shouldn’t need excessive pressure or endless passes to achieve your result.
And that’s ultimately what good efile technique should achieve: a faster, more efficient and more comfortable service for both the nail technician and the client.
